Archived: Fitting In is Overrated-Michaella Marin - Archived

Have you ever noticed how fashion sometimes seems like a distant, unattainable concept? But when you strip fashion down to its core, it really is just a bunch of trendy clothes that go out of style every couple months. There is nothing personal about fashion, because you let all the designers do  the thinking for you.

But style is a whole different concept. Style isn’t solely about the clothes you are wearing on the outside, it is about expressing how you feel on the inside. Style is showing the whole world who you are as a person. The amazing thing about it is that no two people have the same exact style, so embrace that!  It  is what makes you unique and sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. Instead of worrying about what everyone else is wearing, you should focus on what you want to wear and how the clothes make you feel.

I’m not trying to bag fashion, I’m just saying that you shouldn’t let what other people are saying and wearing effect the choices you make. There’s nothing wrong with wearing something that is currently in fashion. But you shouldn’t only wear something because it is the cool thing to wear at the moment. When finding your own personal style ask yourself, do I genuinely like this? Am I wearing this for me or to fit in? Does this outfit show who I am as a person? Don’t be afraid to experiment and mix things up, but be conscious of the school rules of course.

Accepting other people’s style is something we all struggle with, but it’s something we should all work on. Personally, I hate it when someone makes a remark or comment that instantly makes me regret an outfit. Don’t be that guy or girl who ruins another person’s confidence. You don’t necessarily have to like everyone’s fashion choices. But you shouldn’t judge someone’s fashion choice just because you wouldn’t wear it yourself. The golden rule applies to style too; if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

Now you get to choose: do you want to let fashion and other peoples’ opinions affect the choices you make in life, or do you want to be unique? Life is too short to fit in. Be confident with your style and stay true to yourself!
