An honorable agreement required a shaking of left hands. \u00a0To sit on the Master\u2019s left hand was the seat of greatest honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone knew that right-handed people existed. \u00a0They\u2019d heard of them, they had friends whose relatives had friends of relatives who were right-handed. \u00a0It wasn\u2019t that right-handed people were worse than anyone else, exactly, because every good lefty knew that no one is perfect, and acknowledging their imperfections was part of being a good person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But being right was wrong. \u00a0Right-handed people were not just different. \u00a0Somehow, their imperfection was different than everyone else\u2019s imperfection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there were right-handed people who chose to make their left hands dominant, who learned to write left-slant cursive and toss water balloons southpaw, who could criticize? They were doing their best, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So there was never anything officially, explicitly written about righties, because they simply were not\u2026seen. \u00a0Or heard. They weren\u2019t calling attention to themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they were discussed. \u00a0Sometimes with a joke, sometimes as a prohibitive example or cautionary tale. \u00a0\u201cRighty\u201d was slang for nothing nice. \u00a0No one who paid the least attention would mistake the attitude, the general view, toward Right Siders as anything other than \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once, as the day continued its course and the lefteous carried on leftly, a man happened to travel that way. \u00a0He smiled at people, looked them in the eye, and asked questions. \u00a0He listened to their answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some called him an idiot. \u00a0Some described him as enjoying a good time a little too much. And some even accused him of trying to treat right-handed people like everyone else. That may have been his most offensive offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He told this story:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn a holy building, a well-respected Left Hander prayed, \u2018Thank you, Master, that you have made me as me. \u00a0Thank you especially that I am not a plagiarist, a guy who cheats on his girlfriend, and\u00a0<em>especially\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">not like that Right Hander back there. \u00a0I am doing what I should.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the Right Hander was praying, too. \u00a0He didn\u2019t stand in the center of the holy building or up close to the front. \u00a0He huddled in a corner by the door. \u00a0He stared at his shoes and avoided eye contact. \u00a0And he prayed, \u201cMercy. \u00a0Just mercy. \u00a0Please. \u00a0I need it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Traveling Man concluded, \u201cAnd would you ever guess it? \u00a0The Master smiled upon the Right inclined and not the Left. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because any Left who boasts he\u2019s right is wrong, while the Right who knows he\u2019s wrong won\u2019t be left.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that wasn\u2019t okay to say. \u00a0The people who heard it expressed their disapproval, and they did so by ripping him into smaller pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s the end of the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except it\u2019s not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because even though this story didn\u2019t happen here and now, we still have to answer two questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What type of folks do we consider right-handed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we know any of them?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Far away, in a galaxy long ago, there lived a People of the Left Hand. \u00a0They were all left-handed. \u00a0They threw with their left hands and ate with their lefts. \u00a0They led with the left.
