Many people would prefer a different question: “W<\/span>hy read at all?” Be\u00a0<\/span>that as it may, from\u00a0times <\/span>immemorial\u00a0<\/span>literature has\u00a0<\/span>proven to be a\u00a0<\/span>powerful tool for the welfare of\u00a0mankind<\/span>. The key here is the\u00a0<\/span>wealth of knowledge that is\u00a0<\/span>transmitted through this\u00a0<\/span>medium. All books, including\u00a0<\/span>those that deal with war, can\u00a0<\/span>teach us something. No matter\u00a0<\/span>how uncomfortable the subject\u00a0<\/span>matter, we should never forfeit <\/span>an opportunity to learn.\u00a0<\/span>As one can easily infer, the\u00a0<\/span>reason war literature is often\u00a0<\/span>shunned is because of its grisly\u00a0<\/span>and disturbing nature. D<\/span>eath, unnerving situations, total\u00a0<\/span>hopelessness and raw human\u00a0<\/span>evil all form a harrowing picture\u00a0<\/span>that many find repelling. However, many of\u00a0<\/span>these things are unavoidable in\u00a0<\/span>these works if they are trying to\u00a0<\/span>honestly present their topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The importance of\u00a0<\/span>having a truthful account of\u00a0<\/span>these events is apparent. War<\/span>time is\u00a0one of the most\u00a0<\/span>conflicting and contested\u00a0<\/span>periods of civilization. The\u00a0parties involved may have ulterior\u00a0motives and aims that have to\u00a0supplant objectiveness in many\u00a0cases. The belief that the winner\u00a0gets to write history is all-pervasive. Somebody needs to\u00a0offer an alternative point of view\u00a0to balance the scales. Moreover,\u00a0conflict is an indisputable reality\u00a0of life. By looking the other way,\u00a0we are only ignoring the lessons\u00a0the experience might bring us.\u00a0The virtue of war literature is\u00a0that it can be a pillar of truth\u00a0amidst a sea of confusion and\u00a0bitterness.<\/span>\u00a0The best ones\u00a0<\/span>\u201creproduce the genuine\u00a0<\/span>features of the hard\u00a0<\/span>countenance of the age,\u201d as was\u00a0<\/span>said of Hemingway when he\u00a0<\/span>won the Nobel Prize.\u00a0<\/span>Homer and Virgil, Shakespeare\u00a0<\/span>and Byron, Hemingway and\u00a0<\/span>Remarque, these were all great writers who\u00a0<\/span>considered war relevant enough\u00a0<\/span>that they would write about it.\u00a0<\/span>They were able to turn appalling\u00a0<\/span>scenarios into worthwhile\u00a0<\/span>reading. This taken into\u00a0<\/span>consideration, one can look past\u00a0<\/span>the harshness and asperity to\u00a0<\/span>exploit the rich cultural treasure\u00a0<\/span>that is offered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
